The Consultative Committees outline AFNIC's 2010 action plan

The Consultative Committee meetings held on 8 and 9 October 2009 were attended by User and Registrar members.

The meetings enabled AFNIC to report on the progress of its current projects and determine the top priorities for 2010, which will be submitted to the Board of Directors next month for approval.

2010 action plan

The provisional plan features two key action areas:

1. The first action area involves pursuing the supportive projects that have already been launched or approved during previous meetings. For example, this applies to reinforcing the business continuity plan (BCP) and the project to support the creation of other TLDs, such as .paris.


2. The second action area gives pride of place to new services.
   Most of the new services are aimed at strengthening the range available to registrars in terms of technology (implementation of new functionality), administration (overhaul of the system and invoicing terms) and promotional tools (development and economic support).
   
   Other changes with a more direct impact on domain name holders are also lined up in the 2010 action plan:
   
   
   • The terms and conditions of registration should be amended in the first quarter with .fr being made available to French expatriates abroad.
     For the time being, applicants must have an address in France in order to register a .fr domain name. As from March 2010, access to the .fr domain should be extended to any French national whose normal place of residence is abroad.
   
   
   • In 2010, AFNIC is also planning to work on introducing the DNSSEC protocol for .fr.
     DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) uses digital signatures to increase the security of data provided by the DNS.

This action plan will be presented and submitted to the Board of Directors for approval during the ordinary meeting on 13 November 2009.
