AFNIC Board of Directors opens up the .fr domain to French expatriates

At its meeting on 13 November, the AFNIC Board of Directors approved the 2010 action plan and arrangements for making .fr domain names available to French people living abroad.

This availability of .fr domain to French expatriates will only become effective once the .fr registrar has been designated. It is also subject to some quite specific provisions :

• The present process for registration and verification of individuals will be maintained :
  
  

  • There will be no new technical tests on entry of the data, in order to minimize the burden of checking domain name holders’ geographical location ;
  • AFNIC will check eligibility with the registrars managing the domain name :

    • The administrative contact person must have a presence on French territory ;
    • These eligibility checks will be triggered by complaints from outside, as well as in the course of random checking.
  
  
• It is expected that this extension of availability will become effective during the first half of 2010. The exact timetable will be published in the next few weeks.
