Tasks and services
AFNIC has three main missions:
- Technical mission:
- to manage and to delegate some of the Internet Top Level Domains (TLDs) connected to French national territory.
At the present time, AFNIC manages the following country-code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs):
.fr - France,
.re - Reunion Island,
.pm - Saint-Pierre and Miquelon,
.tf - French Southern Territories,
.wf - Wallis and Futuna Islands,
.yt - Mayotte ;
- to ensure accessibility of these domains from every point of the Internet;
- to keep up-to-date databases of these domains;
- to develop and to supply to service providers other services that can contribute to digital economic development in France.
- General interest mission:
- to ensure the continuity of the French national territory on Internet;
- to be a resource center for the French public institutions for Registry services and for support services for the
digital economic development in France.
- Scientific mission:
- to foresee Internet evolutions;
- to promote cooperation with other countries in our fields of expertise.
The AFNIC is absolutely not:
- a domain name reseller: as a neutral and independant entity, AFNIC does not directly sell domain names. This task is ensured by
registrars under contract with AFNIC;
- a legal authority that can be referred for disputes or claims relative on French ccTLDs, except for
obvious breaches of the provisions of the Decree dated 6 February, 2007;
- a legislator in matter of Internet rights;
- an Internet service provider;
- an advisor, a consultant on the choice of a registrar or a service provider.
