The online presence of French small and medium-sized businesses: vast potential worth exploiting

In 2017, although 85% of French people have access to the Internet*, and 80% of French Internet users learn about the web before buying a product or service**, nearly 1 million French VSEs are not yet online. Although the means to develop a business on the Internet are increasingly accessible – from websites to social networks or newsletters – and are highly effective if combined, more than 6 out of 10 VSEs / SMEs say they still lack the information they need to get started. For Afnic, it’s time to change the situation.

A simple, free, fast and comprehensive tool

To better meet the expectations of small and medium-sized businesses, and help them understand all the issues involved in digital technology and then take action, with Réussir avec le Web [Succeeding with the web] Afnic has developed a self-diagnostic tool that is free of charge, fast, complete and personalized, which results in

  • ASSESSMENTS: at what stage of development are their digital practices?
  • COMPARISONS: Where are their competitors with their online presence?
  • PROGRESS POINTERS: What actions need to be implemented?

3 themes + 26 questions + 10 minutes maximum = 1 personalized audit

To establish an accurate diagnostic of the participants’ digital maturity and digital practices, Succeeding with the web is divided into 3 themes: online presence, visibility / e-reputation, business development and then provides practical advice on how to make their business grow thanks to the web.

At the end of the diagnostic, the participants immediately receive a personalized audit and action plan, a score and a comparison with the average for their sector of activity, by e-mail, as well as advice and content with which to launch or optimize their online presence around the main issues involved such as websites, social networks, SEO, etc.

Soon a benchmark for measuring the online presence of small businesses

Thanks to the unpublished data that will be aggregated by Réussir avec le web, Afnic aims to measure digital transformation in France per sector of activity, location and size of a company. The data will facilitate the diagnostics on broader scales such as professional federations, départements [counties] or geographic regions, and will provide additional leverage for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Afnic a major player in online presence

Created in 1997, Afnic is the French acronym for “Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération” (the French Network Information Centre). As the incumbent manager of the .fr TLD with nearly 3.1 million domain names in the .fr namespace to date, it is also positioned as a provider of technical solutions and registry services: it currently manages 14 projects for new gTLDs, including .paris and .bzh. Because of the stakes involved in the online presence of companies, in 2014 Afnic created Réussir-en.fr, a free advice and support platform for small and medium-sized businesses, which now has several thousands of subscribers

An official launch at the SME Trade Fair in Paris on 25 and 26 September

In order to present Réussir avec le Web to its target audience, Afnic is organizing its official launch on 25 and 26 September at the SME Trade Fair in Paris. It will provide a perfect opportunity for small and medium-sized companies to learn more about this new tool and test it live on a special stand (Stand A-02 – Pavillon de la Communication Digitale).

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
