The .fr Top Level Domain continues to grow, with more than 4.3 million domain names registered to date.

The .fr TLD passed the 4.2 million mark in autumn 2024 and continues to grow. With more than 4.3 million domain names registered, the .fr TLD has sustained its momentum, posting a year-on-year increase of +2.13% (+2.01% on the previous period).

This sterling performance confirms the .fr’s status as a trusted TLD for businesses, associations, local authorities and private individuals.

The .fr TLD is:

  •  favoured by small businesses. .fr is the preferred TLD among French SMEs and VSEs: almost 6 out of 10* have chosen the TLD for their website. A first choice explained by its simple access, security and trustworthiness.
  • a tool guaranteeing digital sovereignty: the TLD is managed by Afnic, the French registry and technical resource centre for all things concerning critical Internet infrastructure.
Afnic directly operates the .fr infrastructure, without subcontracting out to the Net giants. Afnic also publishes its own industry-specific software applications.

The .fr TLD is not just an outstanding tool, it is also an everyday partner for businesses everywhere. Thanks to its Réussir en .fr (“Succeed with .fr”) programme, Afnic helps tens of thousands of VSEs, SMEs and freelancers become digitally enabled and gain control over their online presence.

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic’s role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
