The April issue of the Industry Report is dedicated to the individual and corporate holders of domain names under the .fr TLD. Facts highlighted include the following:

  • In February 2013, almost 40% of the domain names under the .fr TLD were held by individuals, a figure which has doubled in 6 years – individuals only represented 20.7% in January 2007;
  • One in every two domain names is filed by an individual;
  • In 2012, the portfolio of individual holders of domain names under the .fr TLD grew by 13%, while that of corporate holders increased by 16%. Previously the opposite was true, i.e. the growth rate of the stock of domain names held by individuals was higher than that for corporate holders.

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
