Thursday 22 January 2015 11:30:00

Since 12:03pm (UTC +1), the Afnic website faces a large-scale DDoS attack. From now, the situation is back to normal.

The scale of the attack has led to the interruption of various services on all the TLDs managed by Afnic with the exception of the DNS resolution which always worked.

01/21/2015 - 12:05pm: First notices due to abnormal traffic on our web services.

01/21/2015 - 12:30pm: Implementation of the first countermeasures.

01/21/2015 - 15:00pm: Unreachability of our operational services.

01/21/2015 - 15:02pm: After a relaunching of all services, a new attack occurred.

01/21/2015 - 15:15pm: All the services were restarted. Only the website remained down as it seemed to be the target of attacks which were still in progress.

01/21/2015 - 22:00pm: The .fr website available again. Some issues remained to be solved such as the TRADE operation.

01/22/2015 - 11:05am: All the Web services returned to normal.

Our technical teams were mobilized throughout the alert to oversee our whole infrastructure and study the adapted countermeasures. We shall remain watchful during the next days and will share a detailed analysis of the incident with the community.

We have currently no precise information about the origin of the attacks, nor the motivations of the aggressors. Authorities are informed and a complaint is going to be filed.

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.
In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic's role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, donates 90% of its profits to its Foundation for Digital Solidarity. Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.
Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has 80 employees.
