[.fr and overseas ccTLDs] New functional developments as of 30/06/2015

Tuesday 31 March 2015 14:00:00

Three major upgrades concerning the "Trade" operation, updates and grace periods will be effective as of 30 June 2015. [...]

Multi-year registration has been possible since March 30 for .fr (France), .re (Reunion Island), .yt (Mayotte), .wf (Wallis and Futuna), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories) and .pm (St. Pierre and Miquelon) ccTLDs.

The upgrade corresponds to the first delivery of a set of technical and functional enhancements referred to as the "convergence project", which has been discussed with the registrars, in particular at the 2014 Registrar Day and during the Afnic consultative committee meetings.

These developments are part of the aim to improve and simplify the shared registry system (SRS) for domain names under the .fr and overseas ccTLDs.

Please find below further details on the operation and planning for the second delivery which involves three major upgrades.

Functional changes

  1. Upgrade of the “Trade” operation
In order to improve the operations involved in changing domain names holders, the "Trade" operation will be modified at 2 levels:
    • Addition of the "Auth-info" authorization code in the order.
    • Separation of the "Transfer" and "Trade" operations: it will no longer be possible to combine a "Trade" operation with a "Transfer" operation. If the change in ownership is accompanied by a change of registrar, two separate operations  (a "Trade" and a "Transfer") will be required.
  2. Merger of update operations
Technical, contextual and administrative updates will become a single update and can be carried out in one order.

  3. Introduction of grace period
Based on the gTLD model, grace periods will be introduced on the following operations:
    • "Create": 5 days (for up to 50 domain names per month or 10% of the volume of registrations for the month to avoid "domain tasting").
    • "Transfer": 5 days.
    • "Renew": 5 days.
During the grace period, the above operations may be cancelled.

TLDs affected by these upgrades

These technical changes will apply to the following ccTLDs: .fr (France), .re (Reunion Island), .pm (St. Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna), and .yt (Mayotte).

Time schedule

  • The go-live of these new features is scheduled for June 30, 2015.
  • You will receive the functional and technical specifications on April 15, 2015.

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.
In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic's role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, donates 90% of its profits to its Foundation for Digital Solidarity. Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.
Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has 80 employees.
