Solutions for each model of TLD
Afnic Registry Services operates the full range of TLD models for a wide variety of uses.
Open TLDs
An open TLD lets third parties register domain names, according to the rules defined by its registryt. Examples of this model are community TLDs such as .museum, and geographic TLDs such as .paris.
Afnic Registry Services provides the functionalities needed to operate them and manage their network of registrars.
Closed or .Brand TLDs
A closed TLD may be reserved exclusively for use by the organisation that owns it. Notable examples are the .Brand TLDs, such as .leclerc or .total. A brand that has its own TLD can create and remove domain names under that domain; it thus possesses its own naming space.
Numerous uses exist today: organisation of digital services, securing of a naming space, rationalisation of a portfolio of domain names and structuring of distribution networks.
Examples of real-world use cases: E.Leclerc and its .leclerc domain: a brand that has made its name a digital territory and Using .bnpparibas to the benefit of the Group’s customers and business lines

A TLD (Top Level Domain) corresponds to the last part of an Internet address, everything that comes after the final dot of a domain name. For example: www.afnic.fr.
There are several types of TLD:
- ccTLDs (Country Code Top-Level Domains) corresponding to a country code and used to identify the nationality or localisation of a website. They always consist of two characters, e.g.: .fr (France), .uk (United Kingdom) .be (Belgium), etc.
- gTLDs (Generic Top-Level Domains) are generic domains containing 3 characters or more, not associated with any specific country. Some are open to everyone, like .com, .net, .info, while others are reserved for a specific community, .museum for example, for the museum community. In 2012 and 2026, ICANN ICANN opened application rounds for new TLDs to be registered for brands, local authorities or projects.
- Examples of gTLD categories include:geoTLDs: geographic domains promoting local identities, such as .paris, .corsica and .bzh.
- brandTLDs: private domains reserved for a brand, such as .mma, .google and .leclerc.
gTLDs are operated by a specific corporation or organisation. ICANN supervises their allocation and management, delegating the operation of each domain to official registries. A domain name registered under a gTLD, if it is an ‘open’ gTLD, can only be reserved through an accredited registrar. For domains associated with a brand, however, only the business that owns the .Brand TLD can create or delete domain names under its domain.
Yes, the registry of an existing TLD can change Registry Service Provider (RSP) and entrust its technical operation to a new service provider. The back-end management of an existing TLD, operated up to now by another provider, can be taken over by Afnic Registry Services, enabling it to benefit from the latter’s registry infrastructure and services.
Contact us and entrust us with the back-end management of your TLD
Changing RSP involves transferring back-end operation of the TLD to the infrastructures of the new operator and following the applicable procedures defined by ICANN. The transition to Afnic’s registry services is conducted in a way that ensures continuity of the domain’s operation and associated back-end services during the change of operator.
The last application window for ICANN’s new gTLD program closed on 12 August 2026. It is therefore no longer possible to submit an application for your own Internet TLD at this time.
ICANN plans to open future application rounds at regular and predictable intervals. However, the timeline for the next application window is as yet unknown.
For organisations that submitted an application in 2026, the process now continues through the various evaluation stages defined by ICANN.
