The .museum, a legacy TLD with high growth potential

Launched in 2001 by the Muse Doma Association created by ICOM – the International Council of Museums, a worldwide non-governmental organization representing a network of 37,000 museum professionals and museum experts in 141 countries – the .museum is a domain name suffix intended for use by every museum but also for people with an interest in, or connection with the profession and museum work. The .museum gTLD has great potential for growth since some 700 world-class museums open every year, and only 38% of museums have a domain name.

A simpler and more attractive .museum gTLD

Afnic has taken new measures to make the namespace accessible to a wider audience. Registration has been simplified and is now fully automated. In so doing, Afnic hopes to attract new retailers for the registration of domain names under the .museum gTLD. The registration fee for a .museum domain name has also been revised downwards, with a price set at 35 euros against 60 dollars beforehand.

These new provisions are intended to promote the .museum suffix among a large number of registrars whose accreditation with Afnic has been open since April 17, 2018.

Finally, to develop and facilitate a community of .museum ambassadors, Afnic has created and will manage the information and registration website welcome.museum and will facilitate the social media pages of the .museum gTLD on Twitter @dot_museum, and on Facebook @dotmuseum.

“Museums are on the move, and the museum community is focused on the future and modern life. For Afnic, the challenge is to make the .museum gTLD a namespace in line with our own image: dynamic, modern, qualitative and one that brings real added value to the whole of this community, all around the world, adds Pierre Bonis, CEO of Afnic.

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic’s role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
