After looking over the activity report of the association over the last six months, the AFNIC’s board of directors has approved the strategic orientations of the association for the years to come.
In the first place, the AFNIC’s mission, according to its statutes, is to “provide, through registrars, essential services to trade, communicate and take part in the digital world”.
In this context, AFNIC is conscious it must fulfil an ethical function as the identity of the administrator of these “essential services” and the way to manage them are far from being neutral.
This ethic manifests itself in many forms in AFNIC’s daily activity: operational excellency, an open governance, no discrimination, transparency, the management of the registry as a public ressource in the general interest, the promotion and the respect of the Internet values…
Thus, AFNIC identified several strategic orientations, whose implementation is already in progress :
encourage and consolidate the emergence, already noticeable, of a real preference for the .fr by the French companies, local authorities and individuals;
win the call for bidders on the .fr and be available for the local authorities if they wish to trust it with the operational management of the French overseas departments;
provide its experience and registry infrastructure to the candidates for new top level domains that would share the same philosophy as AFNIC or would be complementary of the .fr;
ability to operate the registries of the Internet of the Future.
These ambitions are part of a larger context of a multi-annual strategic plan complying with the statutes of the association.

About Afnic
Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.
In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic’s role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.
Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
