Afnic, the association responsible for managing the .fr Internet Top Level Domain and several French overseas and other generic TLDs, today announced the renewal of its partnership with Paris City Council. The .paris Top Level Domain will now be managed by way of a service concession.
Following a public call for tenders, the City of Paris reaffirmed its trust in Afnic for the technical management of the domain, already handled by the Association since 2014. Afnic’s remit will also be expanded to include communication and promotion of the .paris TLD, as well as the development of initiatives designed to increase its adoption by businesses and private individuals.
Officially launched in 2014, the .paris TLD was created in the context of ICANN’s 2012 call for applications aimed at opening new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), particularly those of a geographical nature. With the support of Afnic, Paris City Council seized the opportunity to file its application and obtain its own Internet top-level domain.
Since then, the .paris domain has allowed individuals, businesses and organisations with links to Paris, whether geographical, cultural or sentimental, to clearly demonstrate their attachment to the French capital in their online presence.

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain.
