Afnic has published the latest review of its mediation service. Launched in July 2023, the service provides an alternative to Afnic’s extrajudicial dispute resolution procedures, SYRELI and PARL Expert, with a clear goal: facilitating the resolution of domain name-related disputes which could be settled amicably.

The 2024-2025 review confirms that Afnic’s effective, quick and accessible mediation service is being increasingly solicited as a means to achieve this goal.

  • +36.6% requests between 2024 and 2025. In 2025, Afnic received 168 mediation requests, the majority of which concerned the .fr TLD, a marked increase on 2024 (123 requests, i.e. a +36.6% increase).
  • 63% of procedures opened resulted in an agreement. The efficacy of the tool has also been confirmed, with the number of agreements reached up 5 points compared with 2024 (58%).
  • An agreement reached in 3 business days on average. The mediation procedure has also proven to provide quick results, given that the parties reached an agreement in an average of 3 business days in 2025 (compared with 4.5 days in 2024).

The mediation service is overseen by six in-house Afnic mediators, currently all women. It provides a free means to amicably resolve disputes prior to any extrajudicial or judicial procedures and is another instrument in the fight against online abuse.

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic’s role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
