04/15/2013

Organized by FundatiópuntCat – the registry for the .cat TLD (Catalonia) – with the support of Afnic, the Dot Award 2013 contest is open to any student or group of students – whether in secondary school, high school or at university – studying in the same institution. The objective of the contest is to encourage academic and educational projects on web sites, to get young people involved in the Internet as producers and not simply as consumers of the web, and to develop content as well as technical skills.

“First of all, I should like to congratulate all the participants, who illustrated the superb scope of talent of young people in France, and their mastery of the Web. I also should like to thank them for choosing the .fr TLD for their projects. On behalf of all the staff at Afnic, we wish the winners the best of luck for the next phase in the contest,” said Mathieu Weill, CEO of Afnic.

For the first phase of the contest, Afnic, the registry for the .fr TLD, a key player in the Internet in France and a major supporter of digital innovation, nominated the following:

Best Design Category under the .fr TLD

The award for Best Design under the .fr TLD was awarded to maisondescanuts.fr, a website devoted to the technical, social and creative influence of the Lyon silk industry over the last 5 centuries. Two students in Lyon, Jean-Charles Deglesne and Sixtine Varenne, are behind the overhaul of the website – the first version was launched 7 years ago – carried out as part of their research project at the Communication Institute (ICOM) of Lyon 2 University. For five months, the two students worked around the clock to give maisondescanuts.fr a new look, with a restyled visual identity, and an updated corporate design. Black has been adopted to make the site more modern and pink to give it energy and youth. Finally, the Internet address has been filed under the .fr TLD to inform visitors of the geographical location of this industrial gem in Lyon.

Best Content Category under the .fr TLD

Created in Cherbourg in September 2011 by Baptiste Thevelein and Quentin Tenaud, mazemag.fr is a website by young people for young people. Sixty volunteer editors provide content free of charge and updated each month, related to news, cinema, fashion, music, literature, art or video games. The website – which claims 20,000 unique visitors each month – has no hardline political policy: all of the editors can freely express their own opinions. The choice of the .fr TLD for its internet address logically fits in with the national dynamic, as the editors and readers of the site are spread throughout mainland France and its overseas territories. Finally, the “flagship” objective for mazemag.fr is to develop an app for smartphones and tablets. So stay tuned.

It is worth noting that for the Best Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) category under the .fr TLD, given the low number of entries, the jury was unable to award a prize. However, the jury acknowledged the work done by viedechatô.fr designed and developed by Christopher Pfeifer, and his efforts to use collaborative tools in particular.

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic’s role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
