Why a .paris application?
The .paris initiative is one of the most prominent projects proposed under the new gTLD program currently under development at ICANN (Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers).
The Paris metropolitan area could substantially benefit from the availability of domain names under a dedicated .paris TLD. For instance, .paris domain names could demonstrate a sense of belonging to the metropolis. They could also contribute to the localization of services. And they may additionaly increase the profile of companies or brands associating their name to that of Paris.
Why mobilize for .paris?
The delegation of a TLD by ICANN can only be granted provided applicants have demonstrated mastery of TLD operations as well as wide support from the community a given TLD is designed to serve.
This is why, after having selected its technical operator, the City of Paris is now launching a campaign aimed at mobilizing actors supportive of the project. This campaign will be kicked-off on December 9th, by the Mayor of Paris, Bertrand DELANOË, and his deputy in charge of Innovation, Jean-Louis MISSIKA, during a reception organized at the City Hall. Invitees include participants to the LeWeb09 event.
Now is the time to mobilize
The campaign headquarters are located at www.SupportDotParis.org where pledges of supports are being registered. Supporters are invited to communicate their ideas and contribute to the initiative by signing their support, disseminating the initiative on social networks, and by taking part in the many events which will be organized throughout the campaign (calls for ideas, calls for projects, meetings with officials…).

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic’s role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
