07/20/2005

Saint Quentin en Yvelines, July 20 2005

The AFNIC is aware of the strong demand from private individuals wishing to avail themselves of the registration of
a domain name using the .fr or .re extension directly
(at present, individuals can register using the .nom.fr or .nom.re extension).

Accordingly, the AFNIC wishes to stimulate a debate on the extension to individuals of eligibility for .fr and .re registrations,
seeking to involve all interested parties: individuals, registrars (ISPs), French internet players, business…

As the basis for discussion, the AFNIC will set forth its early thinking on the new conditions of eligibility,
the contemplated scenarios, practicalities and procedures, timetable, etc.

All those interested in the new development are therefore cordially invited to attend this public working seminar to be held on:

6 September 2005, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris (CCIP)
salle Baltard
Bourse de Commerce
2 rue de Viarmes
Paris 1er.
France

– The working language will be French. –

Since the room capacity is limited, we would be grateful if you could make yourselves known to the organisers of this event:
communication@afnic.fr.

We would also appreciate your passing this information on to those around you, so as to be sure of making this working seminar a success.

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic’s role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
