Press release
Saint Quentin en Yvelines, February 1st 2006

The AFNIC has joined the country code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) of ICANN.

Through a constructive and demanding action in this forum, the AFNIC intends to act in order:

to obtain a more operational and reliable service for the registries in the management of Internet resources;
to make sure that the ccTLDs’ diversity and policies are being respected by ICANN;
to point out the ccTLDs’ positions about any question regarding the functioning of the Internet.

Since its creation, the AFNIC has been taking an active part in the technical coordination of the Internet at a world level, promoting quality of the domain name system, stability and interoperability between ccTLD registries.
As a manager of several Internet extensions, the AFNIC is particularly concerned with the functioning of fundamental services. These consist mainly in management, coordination, assignment of Internet resources and supervision of root servers.

With the same mind, as it has been acting since 1998, the AFNIC intends to participate in the next ICANN meeting in Wellington (New-Zealand), from the 27th to the 31st of March 2006.
Meanwhile, the AFNIC continues its partnership with its European counterparts within the CENTR (Council of European National Top-Level Domain Registries), which represents the privileged framework for professional exchanges between registries and for the coordination of their positions towards ICANN.

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic’s role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
