Afnic joins ID4me

Afnic’s goal in joining ID4me is to provide a solution for .fr domain name holders by becoming a digital identity provider, using the domain name system and Open ID Connect open protocols.

This digital identity service is part of a project with a strong European component and aims to supply an alternative to the authentication modes offered by the GAFAM and to supplement national systems to connect to public services. By joining this association, the .fr registry operator Afnic is confirming its commitment to contribute to a secure and stable Internet open to innovation.

It is important to take action in order to propose an alternative based on open, federated and interoperable technologies. About ID4me

ID4me AISBL is a not-for-profit organization with a federated approach. Founded in 2018 in Brussels, ID4me’s protocol was designed to allow the federated login and distribution of personal information across the Internet. It has the decentralization and distribution of identity services, including self-hosted identities, as its core objective. The protocol is domain-based, using the internet’s hierarchical naming system DNS as its underlying identifier technology.

Created with the aim of providing open, self-sovereign digital identity standards providing freedom of choice and ease of use to the users, ID4me’s mission is to provide and distribute an open protocol to every digital identity provider to enable the interoperability of independent, heterogeneous systems to create a true global standard for digital identity.

It consists of an open group of Internet service providers, software developers, and other entities that care about the future of the Internet and want to defend its distributed and federated architecture when it comes to digital identities. The founding members of ID4me are 1&1 IONOS SE, DENIC eG and Open-Xchange AG.

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
