Afnic, the association responsible for several Internet TLDs including the .fr domain, announces the results of its 2023 .fr perception survey. The .fr TLD remains the most named, listed unaided by 7 out of 10 French small and medium-sized enterprises.

In answer to the question “What TLDs do you know, even if only by name?”:

  • 9% of French VSEs and SMEs spontaneously answered .fr.
  • A figure up 2 points on last year (64.7%).
  • The .fr is the most readily named TLD, ahead of .com (69.1%) and .org (20.5%).

Furthermore, 99% of French VSEs and SMEs consider that .fr has a “very good” or “fairly good reputation”. More specifically:

  • 61% of French VSEs and SMEs consider that .fr has a “very good reputation”.
  • A figure up 8 points on last year (53%).
  • And ahead of .com by 11 points (50% of French VSEs and SMEs consider the TLD to have a “very good reputation”).
  • 38% consider that .fr has a “fairly good reputation”.
  • .fr is seen as the domain name that ensures recognition for French expertise in France and internationally (by 88% of VSEs and SMEs).

Afnic will continue to build on this momentum through its Réussir en .fr (“Succeed with .fr”) programme, an original initiative in place since 2016 to help VSEs, SMEs, micro-entrepreneurs, tradespersons, retailers and 16 to 25-year-olds get their online projects off the ground and bring about their digital transformation. Afnic makes free practical advice, expert tutorials, infographics and testimonials from young people and entrepreneurs available on the website, along with a free self-diagnostic tool to measure online presence.

.fr awareness survey methodology

The 2023 survey on .fr perception was conducted online on behalf of Afnic by MV2 Group from 9 to 17 October 2023. The sample consisted of 502 tradespersons, retailers or VSE/SME managers selected based on company size.

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.
