11/19/2021

The Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity has selected 92 winners out of 472 applications for a total allocated budget of over 1.3 million euros. Health, disability and digital mediation are among the main topics of the supported projects.

For the second year, the Afnic Foundation has conducted in 2021 two complementary calls for proposals in order to support a greater number of initiatives: Digital for a fairer society and Digital mediation workshops, with the aim of developing digital solidarity by providing financial support to field schemes throughout France.

Digital for a fairer society

37 projects were selected out of 258 applications received for a total of 844,100 euros, of which 15 are national in scope thanks to the proposal of a platform or mobile application. Two themes emerged strongly this year, health/disability and digital mediation tools, which accounted for nearly 60% of the applications.

Digital mediation workshops

This call for proposals aims to support projects for the creation and running of group workshops to support people remote from the digital world. Three sessions were opened in 2021, which allowed 55 projects to be selected for a total amount of more than 450,000 euros.

Since its creation in 2015, the Afnic Foundation has studied more than 2,100 applications and supported 336 projects with a total amount of over 6.2 million euros. Afnic donates 90% of the profits of .FR to its Foundation to support the development of an inclusive Internet, as well as improving training and awareness of its uses by supporting local and formative digital solidarity initiatives and research projects in the field of digital solidarity throughout France.

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
