General

My contact details (email or postal address, phone, etc.) have changed. Can I change them by accessing my online account?

Yes, you can modify the information using your web interface located in the My Account area (access after identification).

I've lost my IDs (customer number, identification code, password). Who can help me?

Contact our support via the contact form. Our staff will reply as soon as possible and tell you what to do.

As an AFNIC customer, can I use your logo on my communication media?

The answer is no. On the other hand, AFNIC provides a special "AFNIC Registrar" logo which can be downloaded to your personal "My Account" area (after identification).

I am already a registrar under contract with AFNIC; can I be a member of the association?

Yes for further information: How to Become a Member and Cost of Membership.

Are the fees for operations shown on your site the rates I must charge my customers?

No, you are free to fix the prices you want for your customer.

Where can I find details about operations ?

All the procedures and software tools that registrars can use to find and follow transactions can be found at the following address.

Does AFNIC publish an online status report on its services?

Yes, you can see it on operations news

Interfaces

What are the interfaces available to registrars?

There are three interfaces with which to send your operation requests to AFNIC:

- Registrars who wish to do so may use the Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) to have the widest range of features;

- An online web interface, accessible to registered users, is available in "My AFNIC" ;

What are the benefits of EPP?

The Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) helps to standardize, simplify, and automate your operations on domain names and contacts.

I am a registrar and I want to use EPP. Where can I find the information I need, and who should I contact?

All the reference documents for using the EPP (Extensible Provisioning Protocol) are available on our website in the technical guidebook section. You can also call our support service at +33 1 39 30 83 00 or send an email to support@afnic.fr or via our contact form

Operations on contact objects

Can a registrant have the same NIC-Handle with two different registrars?

No, the NIC-Handle is unique for each registrant with each registrar.

Does the UPDATE_CONTACT operation also handle identification problems?

No, because the UPDATE_CONTACT enabled with EPP, as with the web interface, only allows changes to the contact details of the holder representing a corporation, but not the ID number or its name.
However, the identification procedure has been simplified in order to limit discussions about identification problems. You can find out more about the procedure in the Procedures Manual available here.

Why can I not delete a contact object?

Only AFNIC can delete contact objects, whether they concern holders, administrative or technical contacts.
The rule we use is the deletion of any contact not in use for at least three months.

What is the AUTH_INFO and when should it be used?

The AUTH_INFO is secret code linked to a domain name, for a given holder and a given registrar. It is used to authenticate the transfer and the trade operation. The secret code must be sent to the holder of the domain name (and only to the holder), who must also be informed in case of a change.

My customer has several domain names: can the holder have the same AUTH_INFO?

Since the AUTH_INFO is linked to the domain name, the holder, and the registrar, for security reasons AFNIC recommends the creation of a different AUTH_INFO for each domain name belonging to the same holder.

The holder of a domain name has lost the AUTH_INFO and cannot recover it from the Registrar with which the domain name was created. How can I help?

Advise the holder concerned to contact AFNIC support at support@afnic.fr. Procedures have been set up for this specific case and will be communicated directly to the holder.

In which cases should I communicate the AUTH_INFO to the registrant?

According to your contractual obligations, you must indicate the AUTH_INFO to the registrant after the procedure for creating a domain name, at any time upon request from the registrant, or after a change to the update [context] if this changes the AUTH_INFO.

Operations on domain names: RECOVER

What is a RECOVER operation?

The RECOVER operation enables the transfer of a domain name if the outgoing holder no longer exists (merger, acquisition, etc.).

What is the procedure to carry out a RECOVER operation?

To perform a RECOVER operation, you must first obtain an authorization code by sending a request for an AFNIC administrative operation (DOA) to AFNIC duly filled in by the incoming holder only, together with the AFNIC fax header.

Your fax header must include:

  • the domain name (with its extension)
  • the NIC-Handle of the future owner (incoming holder)
  • your registrar login
  • the code for the requested operation, i.e. "RE" for RECOVER

Your DOA must include:

  • the domain name (with its extension)
  • the name of the registrar and their AFNIC customer number
  • the requested operation: checkbox = compulsory transfer (RECOVER)
  • the NIC-Handle of the incoming holder: this means you must create the holder contact before entering the data for the RECOVER operation in order to send AFNIC the NIC-Handle for which the authorization code is to be issued.
  • the identity of the incoming holder: the name and identification number for a corporation
  • the place, date, surname, and first name of the signer, his /her signature, and the seal of the corporation s/he represents.

The DOA must be accompanied by a document proving the legal relationship between the seller and the buyer.

Both documents can be sent to AFNIC:

- directly by email to your account manager (surname.firstname-serviceclient@afnic.fr)

- by fax to +33 1 39 30 83 83

They are available on the web interface: http://www.afnic.fr/extranet.

Your request will be processed by your account manager within 48 working hours. Your account manager can return additional requests for information, reject your application, or validate it.

If it is validated, you will receive an email with the authorization code to be used as the AUTH_INFO when entering the data for the RECOVER operation on the interface of your choice. The authorization code is valid for 15 days.

What are the other options if neither a TRADE nor a RECOVER operation is possible?

In the event that neither a TRADE nor a RECOVER operation is possible, you can provide your account manager or AFNIC support with the documents evidencing the relation between the outgoing holder and the incoming holder out so that AFNIC's legal department can study the possibility of a "protected RECOVER" operation.

Operations on domain names: TRANSFER

What is a TRANSFER?

A "TRANSFER" is the operation enabling a holder to change registrars for a domain name. The operation is initiated by the new registrar. The AUTH_INFO provided by the holder to the incoming registrar validates the operation.

The outgoing registrar is notified of the change in registrar:

  • If the outgoing registrar responds favourably within eight days, the change in registrar takes place immediately
  • If the outgoing registrar opposes the transfer within 8 days, the period for the change in registrar is extended to 22 days before becoming effective. The outgoing registrar may still change its decision and agree to the TRANSFER before the end of the 22-day period.
  • If the outgoing registrar does not respond within eight days, the change in registrar takes place immediately at the end of the 8-day period.

Operations on domain names: DELETE

What is a DELETE operation?

DELETE is an operation enabling the deletion of a domain name.

This does not cause the immediate deletion of the domain name, which is subject to a redemption period of 30 days before being permanently deleted. During this period only the registrar in charge of the domain name can restore it to active status by carrying a RESTORE operation (invoiced at the same price as for the creation of a domain name, and changes its anniversary date).

What is the redemption period?

The redemption period is the 30-day period which starts when a domain name is to be deleted and during which it is possible to restore the identical domain name with the same registrar.

Operations on domain names: RESTORE

What is a RESTORE operation?

The RESTORE operation can be used to restore a domain name during the redemption period triggered by the DELETE operation.

Only the registrar which deleted the domain name can restore it during the redemption period. All the other registrars have to wait until the end of the redemption period before being able to register it again.

The RESTORE operation retains all the same WHOIS information for the domain name as it was before the deletion request. It is not subject to naming constraints.

During the redemption period, can the "custodian" registrar register the deleted domain name for another holder?

No, during the redemption period, a domain name can only be restored identically, i.e. for the same holder and with the same registrar.

Operations on domain names: UPDATE

What does an Update command enable ?

The update command can be used to update four types of information:

  • The holder of the domain name:
  • Administrative information
  • Technical information
  • Contextual information (hold status and authinfo)

As of December 12, 2016, Afnic will not replace the registrar to collect the agreements of the parties concerned for the holder update operation. Should the incoming and outgoing holders agree to a transaction, the registrar will now be responsible for obtaining the agreement from both parties.

Multi-annual registration

How will a domain name create operation be billed if I opt for more than one year of registration?

Billing will take once at the end of the month of registration. The sum will correspond to the number of years of registration requested.

How will a renewal of more than one year of registration be billed?

Billing will take once at the end of the month of registration. The sum will correspond to the number of years of registration requested.

Following a transfer or trade, if the domain name has been created or renewed for x year (s), does the incoming registrar keep the same number of years?

Yes, the years for which a domain name has been registered are never lost.

How will the automatic renewal / maintain system work?

An automatic renewal (maintain) operation takes place as soon as a domain name arrives at the expiry date. It adds one year to the initial expiry date. The operation is billed the month after the initial expiry date, as is currently the case.

How is the expiry date displayed in the Whois database?

The expiry date is displayed in the following format: DD/MM/YYYY, for example 21/12/2017 for 21 December 2017.

Does multi-annual registration apply to all the French ccTLDs?

Yes, multi-annual registration applies to all the French ccTLDs managed by Afnic : .fr, .re, .yt, .pm, .wf and .tf.
