Corelation between the creations of .fr domain names and start-ups in France

October 2013

The high level of correlation observed since January 2007 has been confirmed for the period 2012-2013.

It may be noted that if the average correlation rate since 2007 is around 70%, this figure is actually much higher when no single event affects it.

For instance, the correlation rate stood at 81% in 2007/2008 and 82% in 2010/2011, reaching 90% in 2012/2013 and 94% in 2009/2010.

In 2008/2009, the rate declined to 24% due to the introduction of the auto-entrepreneur status in January 2009, a large number of people having opted for this tax system.

In 2011/2012, the opening of the .fr TLD to holders throughout Europe (December 2011) and the introduction of domainnames with IDN characters (July 2012) dropped the rate to 56%. It may be noted that the persistence of a high correlation between start-ups in France and creations of domain names under the .fr TLD reflects the preponderance of the French market in .fr TLD business, compared with its opening to Europe.

This also leads to two conclusions:

  • firstly, that most of the new companies integrate "internet" issues in their strategies by registering at least one domain name;
  • secondly, that the domain name is usually a .fr TLD, the French namespace becoming one of the indicators of the health of the digital economy in France.
