03/12/2021

Zonemaster is a software package that validates the quality of a DNS delegation and it was developed via a collaborative project between Afnic and our Swedish counterpart the Swedish Internet Foundation. The sole purpose of Zonemaster is to create a stronger and more secure domain name system. The service is developed as a free software and available to the general public.

The Zonemaster project was launched by Afnic and the Swedish Internet foundation in 2013. Since then, a mixed team with members from both companies have been working on developing the service further. Today, Zonemaster has become a reference tool used by many organisations and individuals in the DNS technical ecosystem, for example, ICANN, RIPE NCC and TLD registries.

Sandoche Balakrichenan, Zonemaster technical manager for Afnic explains: ‘‘Since 2013, we have maintained our vision of documenting before coding, which makes the Zonemaster project transparent. One of the best-maintained tools for DNS zone verification, it caters to the needs of both regular and technical user’s. The successful French-Swedish Collaboration for the last seven years in developing and maintaining the Zonemaster project demonstrates that registries could work together to achieve goals beyond their capabilities”.

The renewed partnership marks the entering of a new stage in the project. From now on a lot of focus will be put on the assurance of a continual improvement of Zonemaster’s software and test cases as well as facilitating the user experience.

The Zonemaster project is one of Afnic’s flagship projects. It represents both a concrete example, visible to all, of the Afnic’s high level of expertise in DNS, but also the ability to commit to a long-term partnership. This cooperation with Internetstiftelsen is the perfect demonstration of our respective capacities to cooperate, in the long term, to obtain a quality result, in a relationship of trust. We are very proud of the work accomplished by the team at each release,” comments Pierre Bonis, CEO of Afnic.
