Afnic and The Swedish Internet Foundation are continuing their joint work with the release of a new version of Zonemaster, the reference domain name checking tool.

Zonemaster analyses the configuration of a domain name (also known as a ‘zone’) against a set of tests based on Internet standards and best practices It determines if the configuration is correct and detects potential issues with the accessibility of a domain name and related services. With more than 500,000 tests run, the Zonemaster free open source tool has become a reference service among a large community of users.

The teams at The Swedish Internet Foundation and Afnic have been working together on this tool since 2013, and the partnership was recently renewed with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for a 3-year term. Our shared goal is to continue on this course of regular improvements to the tool in order to make it more efficient and more accessible.

This new version contains 3 main developments:

  • Improved user interface for smoother orientation between the tests run
  • Improved granularity of some tests for better detection of configuration errors and more detailed user report messages.
  • Extended accessibility with 7 languages integrated into the tool

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
